If your looking to add to your lineup of tree lilacs, then
you'll enjoy the next section. We believe that we have the best collection
of named varieties of own-rooted tree lilacs available in one place. This
hardy and undemanding group of ornamental trees is growing steadily in
popularity for the special niche it fills in tough landscape situations.
Own-root tree lilacs, whether from cuttings or from tissue culture, often do not
grow much, if at all, in the first year. We have observed this phenomenon and
have also noticed that after they go through a dormant season, they grow much
better. So we endeavor to plant the majority of our tree lilacs in the
late summer and fall. When these overwintered plants come to you in the
spring, you'll be amazed how fast they grow off, reaching lining-out size easily
by the end of the same season.
These time-saving overwintered tree lilacs are available in the spring on a first-come,
first-served basis, at no additional cost. Because quantities of this type
of overwintered material are limited, you should order early for the best
chances for getting "ready to grow" tree lilacs and cut your tree lilac liner
production time in half! (For common or shrub lilacs, please see "Common
Lilacs" section.

IVORY SILK JAPANESE TREE LILAC
Syringa reticulata ‘Ivory Silk’
This selection has a
rounded growth habit that is both compact and sturdy. The small white
flowers are borne in abundance in large trusses on branch ends. These make
a wonderful contrast and complement to the dense dark green foliage. Bark
on twigs and young branches also provides winter interest from its shiny
reddish color interspersed with wide lenticels, looking a lot like the bark
of a cherry. Ivory Silk will ultimately reach 20’ to 25’ in height by about
15’ in width. Selected in Ontario,
Canada, it is adapted from USDA zones 3 to 7.
